Graduation from a high school/vocational school, or a GED Certificate. At least five (5) years extensive experience in the operation and maintenance of a facility.
Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license.
Satisfactory completion of all requirements established by the Middle River Regional Jail within 1 year of date of employment.
Successful completion of a criminal records check.
Internal candidates must meet qualifications outlined in MRRJ Policy 1.14.
Basic Skills and Abilities Required:
Working knowledge of the use and operation of high-pressure steam operated equipment, HVAC, building automation system, fire alarm panel, emergency power generators, and similar mechanical equipment including their components. Working knowledge of materials and tools used in the maintenance and repair of mechanical equipment. Working knowledge of the practices, methods, tools, materials, and equipment used in the renovation, maintenance, and repair of building and other physical structures. Working knowledge of evacuation procedures and Standards Operating Procedures of the jail. Working knowledge of door operations and security hardware functions. Must have skills in supervising persons from varying backgrounds who have different abilities and education levels. Must be able to compute man-hour requirements, cost of materials, and supervise the completion of many tasks simultaneously. Must have a good working knowledge of OSHA Regulations, ACA Standards, DOC Standards, BOCA Regulations and NFPA requirements including sprinkler systems. Must have the ability to think and act quickly in emergency situations. Must have skills in the use of mechanical and electrical testing and diagnostic equipment, and shop and hand tools. Ability to detect, analyze, diagnose, and correct malfunctions in stationary mechanical equipment. Ability to follow oral and written instructions. Ability to communicate clearly both in writing and verbally. Ability to work effectively with others. Ability to read building blue prints. Ability to maintain order and discipline within assigned areas. Ability to enforce rules fairly and firmly. Ability to supervise inmate workers. Ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Performs skilled, technical duties in operation and maintenance of stationary engines, turbines, air compressors, generators, motors, boilers, and auxiliaries; and heating, ventilating, and air conditioning (HVAC) equipment. Performs duties relating to building maintenance. Operates, maintains, cleans, adjusts, and repair high pressure steam boilers, emergency power generators, auxiliary components, HVAC systems, including air handling system, variable frequency drives, variable air volume units, and emergency recovery system. Installs and maintains electrical, mechanical, and plumbing fixtures and equipment. Inspects, tests and maintains safety and security systems. Performs renovation, maintenance, and repair on buildings and other physical structures. Conducts readings of control and monitoring instruments. Maintains records of operating conditions and of the operation and repair of equipment as needed. Responsible for accountability of all assigned maintenance supplies, equipment, and tools. Assigns, schedules, and directs the work of inmates assigned to assist. Inspects systems’ controls and gauges to ensure proper operation. Makes spot checks, requests supplies, and handles complaints when requested. Assists in the planning of construction projects. Proposes construction/remodeling plans when needed. Monitors waste water (sewage) treatment, water treatment, water tower operations, and maintenance. Determines need for material and equipment required to complete projects according to size and nature of the project. Writes reports as required. Assists in writing Standard Operating Procedures for Maintenance. Assures the equipment, supplies, and materials needed to complete tasks of the Jail are ordered and received in a timely fashion. Maintains and monitors inventory of tools and equipment. Performs preventive maintenance on the emergency generator, heating ventilation, and air conditioning equipment. Assists in major repair assignments with outside service agencies.
Performs additional duties or assignments as directed by the Superintendent and/or Supervisor.

Starting Salary: $35,088- $69,636
